Shodashi of H. H. Sri Swami Premanandaji Maharaj

On Friday, the 20th of February 2004, the Sivananda Ashram observed the Shodashi Puja (worship services on the 16th day following the departure from the mortal coil) for our revered Sri Swami Premanandaji Maharaj’s departure from the mortal coil. Over 600 devotees of Sri Swami Premanandaji assembled at the headquarters from all over, some days before the actual day for this event.

The observances commenced the day prior at 7:30 am on Thursday the 19th of February with the Akhanda Parayan (non-stop recital) of the Ramayana and ended at 7:30 am on Friday, the day of the Shodashi. A grand Paduka Puja (worship of the sacred sandals) of H. H. Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj followed at 9:30 am at the sacred Samadhi Shrine and was attended by all who gathered to remember our beloved Sri Swami Premanandaji Maharaj.

A very elaborate and grand Bhandara or feast was lovingly prepared and served over six sittings to all at the ashram to include Sadhus, Sannyasis and all of the poor in the area of Muni-Ki-Reti which is the immediate neighborhood of the Sivananda Ashram and Rishikesh. The feast was prepared and served to over 3500 people lovingly by devotees of Sri Swamiji Maharaj and residents of the Sivananda Ashram.

A lovely Ganga Aarati followed at dusk at 5:30 pm with the chanting of prayers and kirtan. and the day concluded with the evening satsang bringing to close a day full of reverence and remembrance of the bright light called Sri Swami Premanandaji, a direct disciple of Holy Master Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj, a Guru to many and above all, a most compassionate friend and true helper to all. It was remembered fondly that no one left his presence empty handed or wanting.

H. H. Sri Swami Premanandaji Maharaj’s mortal coil has been removed from our view but his spiritual presence will always continue to help, uplift, guide and inspire all.
