It is difficult to fathom how important the writing and
printing of spiritual books, and the dissemination of those books to the
reading public were to Swami Sivananda. In the very early years, before
there ever was a Sivananda Ashram, Gurudev would write his thoughts on
the only paper that was available-cigarette packaging or the blank spaces
in newspapers-so that his teachings could be eventually printed and distributed.
If he did receive some money for his own use, he would ignore his personal
needs and use the money for writing and printing. Later when the Ashram
was still quite small and chronically short of funds, he said, "If
there is no money, we can close the Dining Hall and all other departments,
but the flow if spiritual knowledge in these books we print should not
stop."
From the World War II years comes an utterly charming
and delightful story about Swami Sivananda that encapsulates so much of
who he was. He had the idea of promoting world peace by sending his spiritual
books to Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin. This was at a time when the
Ashram had no money to spare for postage or for books that would probably
just be thrown away on arrival. An Ashram associate of Swamiji's protested,
saying, "These men will never get these books, and even if they ever
got them, they won't read them." Gurudev replied, "Yes, they
probably will never see these books. But someone in an office will have
to open the box, and maybe he will read the books and be inspired by the
message!" One finds it difficult to imagine the generosity of spirit
and trust in the will of God that stand behind that statement.
Swami Sivananda wrote over 300 books. They were all
simple in style, practical and inspiring. Through these books Gurudev
touched the lives of thousands of people. In each book, again and again
he repeated the same basic themes: "Serve, love, give, purify, meditate,
realize. Be good, do good. Rise up and discover your own divine nature.
Strive ceaselessly. Never despair. God and guru are with you always."
