NEWS FROM THE HEADQUARTERS

SEVA THROUGH SIVANANDA HOME

Sivananda Home has been the instrument of The Divine Life Society Headquarters to serve the needy and the poor people, those who require medical treatment, but have no means, no human support, no shelter, no attendant and those who are rejected by the society.

Though Leprosy or Hansen’s disease is completely curable, even after a full-term course of multi-drug therapy, many a patient has to live the rest of his or her life with irreversible deformities and handicaps, loss of sensation, no feeling of pain when an ulcer appears and therefore having no urge to seek medical advice or treatment at that point. One of the reasons is most of the leprosy patients admitted in Sivananda Home came already in a stage when the nerves of the fingers, toes, eyes and legs were irrevocably damaged, leading to complete blindness, loss of fingers, drop-foot and chronic ulcers of hand and feet. A patient suffering from leprosy does not feel, for example, the heat of a glass filled with tea, and one moment of forgetfulness can cause severe burning wounds, since the reflex to withdraw comes forth only from the sensation of pain. This month four new patients with Hansen’s disease were admitted and treated in the Home; another two Leprosy patients were discharged and their treatment was continued through OPD.

Sivananda Home provides the regular MDT medication, besides health education, exercises, hydrotherapy to prevent sores, consultation and treatment from an eye specialist or surgeon if required, cleaning and dressing of the wounds and supervised distribution of medicines.

The physical part is only one aspect of the disease. Throughout the centuries, people diagnosed with leprosy are being looked down upon, cast away, abandoned, burned, humiliated, and separated from what is called the normal society. This stigma is a heavy and unimaginable load and has left a deep scar in the heart of each and every person who is suffering from this illness, which is often so obvious and visible.

May the good and compassionate Lord be with each and everyone, nearby and far-off, who is feeling alone and dismayed, down, troubled or hurt! Om Namah Sivaya.

“All nature wear one angry frown
To crush you out—still know my soul,
You are Divine. March on and on,
Nor right nor left but to the goal!”
(Swami Vivekananda)

“Feed the hungry. Clothe the naked. Serve the sick. This is Divine Life.”         —Swami Sivananda

HEADQUARTERS CELEBRATES MAHASIVARATRI

In the evening of 5th March, 2008, the Maha Sivaratri Pooja commenced at the sacred temple of Lord Viswanath and concluded next day at 4 a.m. For 5 days from 1st March the resident Sadhaks and visitors of the Ashram did Japa of the Panchakshara Mantra “Om Namah Sivaya” daily. Also Havan was performed in the Yagnasala for the peace of the world.

The day’s programme commenced at 5 a.m. with prayer and meditation. Immediately after that there was Prabhatpheri where all Sadhaks and visitors of the Ashram went around Muni-Ki-Reti singing the “Om Namah Sivaya” Mantra from 7.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m., there was continuous chanting of the Panchakshara Mantra by the devotees in the Viswanath Mandir.

At 8.00 p.m. a grand Abhisheka to Lord Siva was commenced with various articles, viz., milk, curd, ghee, honey, fruit juice, Vibhuti, Ganga water, etc., to the chanting of Rudram and Chamakam from the Yajur Veda.

All the devotees participated individually in the Abhisheka as well as in Archana throughout the night. Simultaneously there was Bhajan and Kirtan in chorus by the devotees in the Mandir premises. After Archana and Arati the sacred Prasad specially prepared for the holy occasion was distributed at the Annapurna Dining Hall in the early morning.

THE 58TH BASIC YOGA-VEDANTA COURSE

The 58th Basic Yoga-Vedanta Course of the Yoga-Vedanta Forest Academy was inaugurated on Saturday, 1st March, 2008, in which 40 students from 14 states had joined. After the invocatory prayer, all those present were welcomed by the Registrar of the Academy and they were all introduced. H.H. Sri Swami Yogaswarupanandaji Maharaj, Vice-President and H.H. Sri Swami Vimalanandaji Maharaj, General Secretary, The Divine Life Society Headquarters graced the function. H.H. Sri Swami Yogaswarupanandaji Maharaj lighted the Deepa as a token of the commencement of the course.

H.H. Sri Swami Vimalanandaji Maharaj welcomed the students to Worshipful Gurudev’s Ashram and told them that nothing happens without God’s Will. They are also here because He willed it like this. Swamiji said that he sat at the holy feet of the two great Masters––Gurudev Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj and His Holiness Sri Swami Chidanandaji Maharaj and learned all what he knows. Giving an example, he said, when we sit in the Sun, every ray penetrates our body and it gets revitalised. Similarly when we sit at the holy feet of great Masters, we partake their nature. Swamiji gave a brief account, right from his arrival in the Ashram in 1953, his stay in the artificial cave below Sri Dattatreya Temple situated in the forest area which was infested with innumerable scorpions, snakes and wild animals in those days, about his first meeting with His Holiness Sri Swami Chidanandaji Maharaj and Gurudev Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj. The way Swamiji described it, was quite interesting, inspiring and educative. Swamiji said that the students are fortunate to be here on the holy banks of Ganga and advised them to be regular in their studies and Sadhana. Meditation will make their mind calm but when the Pranic energy is wasted the mind gets disturbed. They should go from here as transformed persons and try to make other people happy. They should give to others as much as possible and should not expect anything from others. Swamiji concluded his talk by blessing the students.

H.H. Sri Swami Yogaswarupanandaji Maharaj told the students that it is very difficult to get an opportunity to be at the holy banks of Mother Ganga, in this Punya Bhoomi. It is due to their meritorious actions. They should try to make themselves free from all worries here. By joining Basic Yoga-Vedanta Course, they will get rid of many wrong notions about themselves, the world and God. Here they will get learning, being and experience simultaneously. Swamiji advised them to give full attention to the course, take notes in the class and avoid eating outside the Ashram in order to keep themselves healthy. By practising Yogasanas, their body will become more flexible and healthy and they will look younger than before. They should be like a honey bee and should try to gain the maximum from the Course. Bhagavan Vyasa has said in the Mahabharata that the essence of the eighteen Puranas is that doing good to others is Punya and giving pain to others is Papa. Therefore, they should Be Good and Do Good. The purpose of this Course is to make them feel oneness and share peace and harmony with others. Swamiji concluded his talk by invoking the blessings of Worshipful Gurudev upon them.

After Saraswati Puja and Prasad distribution, the function came to a close.
