NEWS FROM THE HEADQUARTERS

SEVA THROUGH SIVANANDA HOME

“When asked about their problems, most homeless people list abuse, even by the police—beatings, extortions and evictions—as their biggest problem. Within the vulnerable group of homeless people, women, children, and the disabled are doubly cursed.”

(Times of India, Jan. 2008).

The Divine Life Society Headquarters humbly tries to provide a Home for this most defenceless and assailable group of people, who even face severe problems in getting access to fundamental amenities such as drinking water and sanitation, what to speak of security, protection, medical aid and the basic human need for social interaction and communication. Exposed to weather extremities, stripped off from one’s family ties and identity, homeless and nameless. A nobody. Just BARE.

Frankly speaking, this is to an understatement: observing the case of a youngster, admitted last month, who was thrown out of the Holy Mother Ganga’s lap at the very last minute, totally drenched. Confused and worried: “Where am I? Where do I belong? What is left of me?” This gentleman seemed to have lost everything, even his very last straw of hope, but the Almighty brought him back, washing him ashore and directing him to the Home. The healing touch of the continuous spiritual Bhajans, the daily routine of a big household, caring, relating oneself to others with a brotherly affection, playing, reading, singing and lo! One can see a spark of liveliness coming back.

More patients were admitted this month: an old aged Babaji, suffering from leprosy, multiple-handicapped, who walks with great difficulty, talks with a blurred speech and can hardly see or hear. One day in early morning, this patient was just lying down near the main gate of Sivananda Home.

From the Ashram Headquarters, too, new patients were brought to the Home for admission and treatment. For example, the Home was informed about a patient, lying down in a semi-conscious state, bleeding from the ear and having seizures. A kindhearted and compassionate Sadhu personally arranged for the admission of this patient. By God’s Grace, after an entire check-up for external and internal head injuries, investigation and medical treatment, the patient recuperated quickly, could recollect the name of his village and soon the son arrived to take his father back home.

Jai Gurudev! Jai Sivananda!

“Oh God will make a way. Where there seems
to be no way.
He works in ways we cannot see. He will
make a way for me.
He will be my guide. Hold me closely to
His side.
With love and strength for each new day.
He will make a way.”
