WHO IS A GURU

Swami Sivananda

He who initiates Mantra is Diksha Guru or initiatory Guru. He who teaches the various forms of Sadhana and Yoga is Siksha Guru, or the teaching Guru. Of these two, he is the Supreme Guru, from whom the great Mantra of Ishtadevata has been heard and learnt, and by him alone Siddhis can be attained. He who is pure in thought, word and deed, who has mastery over the senses, who has knowledge of the scriptures, who is truthful, serene, and who has God-realization, is a Guru. Let each man take the path according to his capacity, temperament and understanding. His Sat Guru will meet him along that path. A man of bad character cannot be a Guru. I always bow down to the lotus-feet of my Guru or Preceptor, by whose grace I have known for ever that "I am Brahman" and that the whole of the phenomenal universe is superimposed on me like the snake in the rope.

The relationship between the Guru and the disciple is not physical, social or personal but spiritual and, so, eternal, till the salvation of the disciple.
